Absolvent drážďanské techniky, jehož silně ovlivnil K. Weissbach. Schilling založil spolu s Juliem Graebnerem významnou architektonickou kancelář, která navrhovala kostely, vily i další stavby převážně v Sasku a několik kostelů vyprojektovala i pro české země. Stylově přešli od pozdního historismu přes secesi až k moderně.
